The Panama Canal, which was supposed to connect North and South America, was being dug when Vasco Barretas was young and this story is about him. Vasco had a natural desire for excitement and adventure because Indian-Spanish blood flowed in his veins. He was very lazy, but no one blames him for that, his laziness was the result of education, or rather the lack of it. He did not learn to care about the luxuries of life because the most necessary things were few and easy to get.
