Born near Taunton, Somerset, Kinglake abandoned his successful legal practice to devote himself to literature and public life. His first literary venture, 'Eothen', was a hugely popular work of Eastern travel that evoked "the East itself in vital actual reality." However, his magnum opus, 'The Invasion of Crimea', was the most effective work of its class, providing an account of the Crimean War from its origin to the death of Lord Raglan. Kinglake was also a Whig politician, serving as a Member of Parliament for Bridgwater.
